Island Lake Rec Area Hosts MS Ride

Cyclists 12 years old and up are invited to attend the 26th annual Bike MS Fall Breakaway Ride, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Island Lake Recreation Area south of Interstate 96 near Kensington Road at 12950 E. Grand River Ave. in Green Oak Township.

The event is hosted by the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The Fall Breakaway event is designed to help raise money and awareness to support Michigan residents living with multiple sclerosis. More than 100 people are signed up, and registration is till open.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms can range from mild, such as numbness in the limbs, to severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision.

Open to cyclists of all abilities, the Fall Breakaway ride features stocked rest stops, bicycle mechanics, rider assistance, and medical support. Participants can choose from between a 5-mile or 9-mile mountain bike trail and a 12-mile or 24-mile paved road bike trail. All routes begin and end at Dodge Pavilion.

Registration is open up to the day of the event. A $30 registration fee and a minimum pledge of $100 per rider is required. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the bike routes open at 9 a.m.
