Sadly, preventable injuries are the greatest killer of kids 14 and under. “In Washtenaw and Livingston counties we've had our share of preventable injuries to children” said Amber Kroeker, Safe Kids Huron Valley coordinator and Injury Prevention health educator for Mott Children’s Hospital.
That's why Safe Kids Huron Valley is joining Safe Kids Michigan and Safe Kids Worldwide to celebrate Safe Kids Day on May 18, 2013.
“Together we hope to raise awareness to continue our efforts and protect kids from serious preventable injuries,” said Kroeker. “What we’ve found is that many injuries to children can be avoided if parents and caregivers are educated or reminded of some very important and easy steps to keep their children safe.”
For example, in Livingston and Washtenaw counties, Safe Kids Huron Valley hosts free car seat checkup events to inform parents on how to properly install their child’s safety seat in their vehicle. Other events are focused on educating parents on infant safe sleep habits; fire, water, and home safety; Walk to School Day; poison prevention; sports safety, and more.
