Thayer Coggin Trunk Show

Gorman’s Home Furnishings and Interior Design, the style leader in home furnishings and accessories, will host the only Michigan stop of the historic cross-country Thayer Coggin Trunk Show tour at its Southfield, Mich. contemporary furniture showroom, located at 29145 Telegraph Road, May 2-8.

The national tour showcases internationally acclaimed designer Milo Baughman’s mid-century, modern era furniture designs. Dozens of Baughman’s most noted pieces created exclusively for Thayer Coggin Furniture, will serve as the centerpiece of the tour.

“Southfield was one of only 21 cities in the country selected to host a stop on this elite tour.  It’s a perfect choice and an honor for Gorman’s to host,” said Tom Lias, president and COO of Gorman’s. “Metro Detroiters have a sophisticated appreciation for contemporary furniture and its history. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Baughman is often regarded as one of the leading contemporary furniture designers of the late twentieth century. His collection spanned decades, closing with the iconic wood-tipped Studio MB, Baughman’s last design before his death in 2003.

Baughman’s close friendship with Thayer Coggin allowed them to collaborate on groundbreaking designs that remain cornerstones in American-made, contemporary furniture.

According to Lias, “Thayer Coggin designs are often known to appreciate in value as they age. Designs that were sold twenty-five years ago are actually selling for more money than what you would buy new pieces for today. Good design has benefits.”

The tour will include the first piece of furniture designed by Coggin and Baughman in 1953, the Scoop, a lipstick red chair with polished stainless-steel legs.

"In celebration of our 60th anniversary, we are taking these design classics to furniture showrooms across the country.  It's a furniture trunk show, so to speak, we just deliver it with a transfer truck," said Mrs. Royale Coggin Wiggin, Thayer Coggin President. "Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin worked together to define a classical era of modern furniture in America. This road show will highlight the history of our company and spotlight our commitment to excellence and craftsmanship in making American contemporary furniture."

A cocktail reception event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 2, and will feature special guest speaker Phil Miller, director of sales and marketing for Thayer Coggin Furniture. He will discuss the friendship and partnership between Coggin and Baughman.  There is no cost to attend the cocktail reception or roadshow, however registration is requested as space is limited and can be made by calling 248-353-9880.

The roadshow is open to the public and can be viewed during store hours: 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Tues., Wed., Fri., and Sat.; 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Mon. and Thurs.; Noon-5 p.m., Sun.
