Campers who want a quick camping trip close to home are invited to the park, open to camping for the first time in decades for this night only. This is part of the National Wildlife Federation's initiative to encourage people to camp, so you are also welcome to just set up camp for the day if you don't want to overnight it.
Numerous activities will take place throughout the day on Saturday including tug-o-war, crafts and games provided by the Friends of Island Lake SRA. A Rec 101: Intro to Fishing will be held on the river, and discounted canoe trips will be offered by Heavner Canoes. Evening activities include a night hike complete with bonfire, s'mores and storytelling.
All this is provided for FREE, but you must contact the park office at 810-229-7067 to reserve your campsite. for more details go to www.michigan.gov/islandlake.
