Great Escape: Howell Melon Festival

Come celebrate the harvesting of the Howell melons!

In its 51st year, the Howell Melon Festival is something the area has long looked forward to each summer season. This weekend, downtown Howell hosts the Melon Festival, which paying homage to the great melon grown only in Howell, Michigan. It's a hardy fruit, extremely tastey and why not celebrate it with a little something for all the age groups our county has to offer?

Starting with the 34th Annual Melon Run, which starts Friday at 6 p.m., Howell's Melon Fest gives an unlimited weekend of fun for all.

The Howell Melon Fest is one of the largest fundraising events of the year for Howell and helps to support downtown businesses as well as other local events such as the much-loved Legend of Sleepy Howell each Halloween.

Nathan Voght, Director of Howell's Downtown Development Authority says, "Melon Fest is a fantastic family friendly event. Its a perfect ending celebration to a great summer season that all the business get involved in."

Saturday there will be a used book sale at the Howell Carnegie Library, free melon wine tasting at the Main Street Howell Winery, tours of the Howell Depot Museum, carnival rides, melon cruises and more.

The Main Street Winery has more than 1,400 bottles of their famous melon wine on hand in anticipation of this years event, so there will be plenty to go around!

From melon wine to melon ice cream, the melon flavor is sure to bring you back year after year to celebrate!
