Great Escape: Old Mission Peninsula
This escape takes you a little farther out of town, but it's well worth the drive.
This past weekend, my husband and I escaped from our jobs, children and daily life to the sanctity of Northwest Michigan's Old Mission Peninsula. For those of you who do not know, Old Mission Peninsula is adjacent to Traverse City and serves as home to seven different vineyards and wineries.
With map in hand, we visited Black Star Farms, Brys Estate, Bowers Harbor, Peninsula Cellars, Chateau Chantal, 2 Lads Winery and -- my favorite -- Chateau Grand Traverse.
We were able to taste up to five different wines at each venue, some for free, others for a small fee. Many of the wineries had quaint little areas with tables outside to watch the views while sipping your wine and indulging in some cheese and crackers.

For a larger group, I would suggest stopping at Chateau Chantal where the large patio area overlooks the water and where, with reservations, you can enjoy a chef-prepared meal while watching the sunset.
The peaceful drive up the coast of the peninsula offers breathtaking views of both sides of the coast. Rolling hills of grape vines and periodic stops at each winery leaves you in a complete state of relaxation and appreciation for all that this great state has to offer.
