Legislative Panel on May 5th Ballot Proposal

Panel of current and former Michigan Legislators will discuss the new taxes in the May 5th Ballot Proposal on March 24.

A panel of current and former Michigan Legislators will discuss the May 5th Ballot Proposal on March 24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m at ReMax Platinum, 6870 Grand River Ave., Brighton, MI 48114. Senator Patrick Colbeck (7th District), Representative Ray Franz (101st District) and former Representative Tom McMillin (45th District) will discuss the various impacts of the ballot initiative if passed.

The panelists will discuss the bills that would be enacted by passage of the ballot proposal. The changes include raising the state sales tax 17% from $0.06 to $0.07. The gasoline tax would be changed from a retail to a wholesale model and is structured to automatically increase with inflation and/or the base fuel cost. The proposal also increases vehicle registration fees on new vehicles, while possibly impacting the ability to deduct them from federal taxes. Overall, the proposal will increase taxes by as much as $2 billion. The speakers will also detail how only a portion of the tax revenue will be spent on roads. The presentation will include alternatives to Michigan’s road funding dilemma and describe concrete steps that can be taken should the ballot proposal fail.

The event is free and open to the public.
