Mt Brighton presents the 33rd annual Slushcup

The 33rd annual Mt. Brighton Slush cup was held on March 15Th. The event includes a Big Air Competition, the Retro Ride, and The Slush Cup. The event is free to enter if one has a lift ticket or a season pass. A season pass to any other resort in the area will result in a free lift ticket as well.

The participants of the Slush Cup had to snowboard or ski across a 110-foot slushy pool of water to qualify. Each year over 100 people compete and the first 50 people that successfully glided over the freezing cold water and made it to the other side received a Mt. Brighton towel. This was the first Slush Cup since Vail Resorts acquired Mt. Brighton, and they made the high expectations people had for the event become a reality. This year it was longer and wider than ever, making it that much harder to get across.

“The slush cup was rad” junior Nick Lindig said.

Each year more and more people are being attracted to the Slush cup, making it one of the biggest events of the year. People come from all over to take part and to watch this entertaining competition. Hartland’s very own Boardercross coach took the win for the Slush Cup. The first place prize was a backpack and coat compliments of Helly Hanson. The other 5 winners were determined by who made it across two times and also that received the loudest cheers from the crowd watching the event. One of the winners was one of our very own students, Anderson Day. He participated last year as well and said that the pool was a lot better insulted so the water stayed in better and that the drop into it was not as steep so it made for a smoother ride across.

“My favorite thing about the slush cup is watching people fall into the freezing cold water,” contestant Kennedy Day said.

The Retro ride consisted of contestants wearing vintage skiwear and the best outfit wins. Most of the contestants were older men who have been riding for many years. There were many people riding very old fashion skis and snowboards, which made it fun to watch.

The Big Air competition entailed throwing your best trick over a 50-foot jump. Paul Niemi took gold for the Big Air competition; the trick that sealed his victory was a doubled front flip. He took home a brand new snowboard and bindings for the first place win.

The event was an overall success and I ensure everyone is looking forward to the 34th annual Slush Cup next year. The sponsors did a great job entertaining the crowd and a lot of money was raised.
