Tour de Cure Kicks Off in Brighton

Cyclists will gather at Brighton High School on June 11, geared up and ready to ride as far as 100 miles in a day as the American Diabetes Association hosts its annual Tour de Cure.

Brighton is the kick-off point for the fund raiser, which gives cyclists a choice of rides through Livingston County, ranging from 10 to 100 miles, and even a "virtual ride" option, allowing cyclists of all levels to participate in raising money for the cause. All routes return to Brighton High School.

Mackenzie Stuenkel, 15, of South Lyon, is among this year's Tour de Cure Ambassadors, chosen to help raise awareness of the ride and the ADA. Stuenkel has had Type 1 diabetes since she was 6 years old. Her earliest memory is in the hospital when she was diagnosed.

The and are among Tour de Cure sponsors, along with Nissan, , Michigan Podiatric Medical Association, Carabba’s Italian Grill in Novi, American Cycle & Fitness, Blue Care Network, Luma Electric and Novo Nordisk.

“Even in this tough economic environment, so many of our community-minded business leaders are recognizing the need for ongoing public program support,” said Anika Halladay, ADA Tour de Cure Event Manager. “Diabetes is a growing concern among our population.”

Tour de Cure offers complimentary breakfast, rest stops with snacks and drinks, celebrity riders, lunch by Carrabba’s Italian Grill, massages, kids’ zone, silent auction, first aid from the MPMA and live entertainment.

Individuals and teams are encouraged to raise money and sign up to ride one of several routes. A fundraising goal of $350,000 is set for this year’s ride.
