Wild Weather Warnings for Southeast Michigan
High winds are expected to develop this afternoon, and a tornado watch has been issued.
As temperatures soared into the spring-like 60s Sunday, theΒ National Weather ServiceΒ (NWS) announced high wind and storm warnings, and a tornado watch, for southeast Michigan.Β
At 11:20 a.m., the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK, issued a tornado watch through 8 p.m. for much of southeast Michigan.Β A tornado watchΒ is issued to alert people that weather conditions indicate that a tornado could develop in your area.Β
Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the NWS issuedΒ a high wind warning, in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. InΒ the wake of a cold front expected to move through the area, winds of 30-40 miles per hour, with gusts in excess of 55 miles per hour, are possible this evening.Β
According to the NWS, high wind impacts may include:
- tree damage leading to downed power lines and numerousΒ power outages
- weak structures like old barns and sheds being blown down
- travel on north-south roads becoming hazardous in theΒ strong winds, especially for high profile vehicles
