Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Chelsea area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.
Patch is celebrating five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. This list is just a snapshot, with countless other athletes helping shape the rich sports culture in our area.
Tony Scheffler is a Chelsea native who set a Chelsea High School record with 1,340 receiving yards as a senior before going on to star at Western Michigan University, where he was twice named First Team All-MAC. He was drafted in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos and spent eight seasons in the league with the Broncos and Detroit Lions, finishing his career with 258 receptions for 3,207 yards and 22 touchdowns. In 2024, Scheffler was inducted into the Western Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame.
Chelsea native Ali Mann was a four-year starter for Bowling Green State University's women's basketball team from 2003 to 2007, helping the Falcons post a 103-25 record and reach the MAC Tournament championship game in all four of her seasons. She finished her college career second in school history in scoring and third in rebounding, and became just the sixth player in league history to be named MAC Player of the Year, MAC Freshman of the Year and MAC Tournament MVP. Mann was a two-time All-MAC First-Team selection and helped BGSU reach the "Sweet Sixteen" of the NCAA Tournament in 2007. She was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2024.
A 2001 graduate of Chelsea High School, Lindsey Baker Evans went on to become one of the most decorated volleyball players in Alma College history, earning MIAA MVP honors in back-to-back seasons in 2003 and 2004. She was named First Team All-MIAA three times during her career and set a program record with 1,573 assists in a single season, a mark that still stands. Baker Evans finished her Alma career with 5,106 total assists, nearly 1,200 more than the next-closest player in program history. She was inducted into the Alma College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.
Fallon Henley, born Theresa Schuessler, grew up in Chelsea before launching a professional wrestling career that has taken her to the top of the industry. She got her start on the independent circuit under the name Tesha Price and later competed for All Elite Wrestling before signing with WWE in 2021. Henley has since become a former NXT Women's North American Champion, NXT Women's Tag Team Champion and WWE Women's Speed Champion, and now performs on WWE's SmackDown brand as part of the villainous trio Fatal Influence.
Bill Eversole was born in Chelsea and built a stock car racing career that carried him from local tracks to NASCAR's national touring series. He spent six years competing in the ARCA Menards Series, racking up 50 starts and 13 top-ten finishes, and earned ARCA Rookie of the Year honors in 2003. He also made a start in NASCAR's Nationwide Series at Michigan International Speedway in 2004. After stepping back from full-time competition, Eversole transitioned into a role as a car owner while staying closely connected to his hometown, including visits to the Chelsea District Library to introduce local kids to stock car racing.
