Free Workshop for those with type 2 diabetes

The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan is offering a FREE Diabetes-PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) workshop, starting in June.

During the winter, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) held a pre-diabetes workshop at the Chelsea Wellness Center.  The workshop went so well, NKFM is once again partnering with the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation to offer a FREE workshop, this time to area residents who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

The NKFM has a program that is uniquely designed for participants who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  The Diabetes-PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) workshop is a six week workshop designed to provide the skills and tools needed by people with type 2 diabetes.  They would like to offer the program to anyone in our five healthy towns, and beyond, who qualifies.

We’ve been trying to determine the best way to get the word out about this program.  It’s hard to know where people go for their news, these days.  And with so many things on our calendars it’s sometimes hard to fit it all in.  But some things are more important than others.  We think this is important, regardless if you have a new diagnosis of diabetes or have lived with it for a long time.

To make the program as easy for people as possible, we are going to : 1) hold the program locally 2) ask local physicians to encourage their patients to attend 3) make the program open to all who qualify – with or without physician referral or encouragement 4) hold the Diabetes-PATH workshop at the Dexter Wellness Center 5) sweeten the pot with incentives for participants, like guest passes to a local Wellness Center and pedometers.

The six week workshop begins Wednesday, June 5th, from 10 am to 12:30 pm.  If you or someone you know has been told by a doctor ‘you have type 2 diabetes’ you or they can register for the Diabetes-PATH classes.  For more information, CALL or EMAIL Leigh Vogelsong at the NKFM (800.222.9800 or lvogelsong@nkfm.org).  Physician looking for more information you can contact her the same way.
