Alleged Drunken Driver Hits - Wait for It - 'Drive Sober' Sign

Michigan man allegedly leaves a clue after mowing down police signs with a pickup – not his, but one he was supposed to be fixing.

There’s a delicious irony in what happened during a recent crackdown on drunken driving in Grand Blanc Township:

An alleged drunken driver crashed through a construction zone and careened around the police station’s front lawn before hitting a sign warning “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” MLive/The Flint Journal reports.

Police didn’t initially connect the 34-year-old suspect, who name hasn’t been released, with the vandalism-by-automobile – or even know that it had occurred until about 12 hours after the suspect was in custody.

Police became suspicious about 2 a.m. Aug. 23 after seeing a truck, its tires flattened, stopped in the middle of the road. They followed the motorist to a nearby residence, and arrested him on charges of operating while intoxicated. His blood-alcohol content was reportedly .25, more than three times the legal limit in Michigan.

It wasn’t until the next day that police discovered the signs, which also included a “watch for fire trucks” sign, and a ground flood light had been damaged.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is National Highway Traffic Safety Administration iniatiative to curb drunken driving from Aug. 15 through the Labor Day weekend, historically one of the deadliest holidays on the nation’s roads. The Michigan State Police focused its efforts on 40 Michigan counties, including Genesee, where the suspect’s jaunt took place.

When police arrested the man, he admitted he “had a lot to drink,” police said, but wouldn’t say how he’d damaged the Ford F150 pickup – which turned out to be registered to a Linden man who had hired the suspect to work on it.

But police are confident they have the right man in custody. Evidence collected near the broken signs included a receipt with the suspect’s name on it, according to the report.
