The expansion of open enrollment for out-of-district students was prompted by the development of the new Avondale/Oakland University partnership lab school at Auburn Elementary. The new partnership school, scheduled to open in the fall of 2013, is organized as a clinical teaching model to implement best practices for
student learning, student-teacher education, and teacher-to-teacher mentoring. The establishment of the Avondale/OU partnership lab school is expected to draw interest not only to Auburn Elementary, but to the district as a whole.
“Avondale is a highly collaborative district where teachers, staff and families work together to provide the best
education possible to our students,” said George Heitsch, Ed.D., superintendent of Avondale Schools. “The Avondale/Oakland University partnership concept is
drawing interest from families outside of the district because it is reflective of our creative and nimble approach to new teaching and learning methods and opportunities.”

The Schools of Choice enrollment is for kindergarten through third grade only and applications must be received
by May 24, 2013. The number of spaces available for Schools of Choice students in each elementary building will be determined by the Avondale School District. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available, a lottery will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013, as specified by state law. All applicants will be notified via U.S. mail of their enrollment status by June 10, 2013.
If an applicant’s name is not drawn in the lottery for admission to the Avondale School District, the student’s name will be kept on a waiting list and will be notified if a seat becomes available. All applications will be thoroughly screened to ensure that accurate information has been provided.
