Clawson will celebrate Bike to School Day May 8, 2013. Bike to school day is part of the celebration of National Bike Month. Communities and schools host October walks and May bike to school days and this year the school and city are collaborating on Bike to School Day for May 8th. Why bike to school? It's fun, builds healthier habits, allows for a cleaner environment, promotes safety, and creates a sense of neighborhood. Why have a special day? Fewer children walk or bike to school than did so a generation ago. In 1969 48% of students grades K-8 walked or biked to school. In 2009 13% of students in grades K-8 walk or bike to school. Walking or biking to school gives children a sense of responsibility and independence. The entire community benefits when there is less traffic congestion. Many kids are not getting the exercise they need and less active children are more likely to be overweight and at an increased risk for chronic diseases. Experts recommend that children get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Our community can create safe environments for children of all abilities and teach safety skills to walkers, bikers and drivers. Our police department may host bike safety classes in schools before the event. Students and families are encourage to meet at neighborhood designated locations to participate in a bike ride to school. Watch for Clawson Schools superintendent, Clawson City Manager, Clawson Mayor and our Police Bike Officers as bicycle riders in the designated locations.
