Sport drinks and pops are especially hard on teeth because they contains acidic flavor additives and a lot sugar, which further increases your chance of developing cavities. The best beverage to enjoy is water, it is good for your teeth as well as your overall health.

There are brace friendly eating and brushing habits that can lead to a successful outcome. Avoid hard foods such as nuts and pretzels. Foods such as apples and carrots should be chopped into small pieces before eating to reduce the stress on your braces. Avoid sticky foods such as caramel, Gummy Bears, Milk Duds, Juju Beads, Tootsie Rolls, Bit 'O Honey, Now & Laters, Jolly Ranchers, licorice, Gob Stoppers, Skittles, or Starbursts. No chewing gum! Every piece of gum increases your time in braces by at least a week! No chewing ice! Teeth should be brushed after every meal or snack, and flossing should be done daily to decrease the risk of tooth decay.

Habits such as nail biting and pencil chewing can also damage braces. Remember that damaged braces mean extra appointments, inconvenience and extended treatment time. If your braces do get damaged, it is very important to see your orthodontist to correct the problem, broken braces are not doing the job properly!

Remember successful orthodontic treatment is a team effort between the orthodontist and the patient.
