Clawson Soccer Outlasts Macomb Lutheran North In Shootout Win

The Trojans boys soccer team advances to district finals for a game against Detroit Country Day on Friday.

Two days, two overtimes and two shootouts.

That’s how long Clawson and Macomb Lutheran North needed to settle the schools’ second round district playoff game. In the end, it was the Trojans who pulled out a 3-2 win in a second shootout on Thursday at home.

The game was suspended on Wednesday due to poor field conditions. Play picked up on Thursday with 15:21 remaining in the first half and Clawson up 1-0.

Both teams needed the remainder of the first half to get back into the flow of the game. Tyler Lehman scored his second goal of the game for the Trojans about 10 minutes into the second half to give his team a 2-0 lead.

Facing elimination, Macomb Northern North came storming back. It scored two unanswered to tie the game up 2-2. The second goal came with less than two minutes left in the game.

Neither team scored in two overtime periods, so the game went into a shootout. In the first shootout, each team picks five shooters and the team with the most goals wins.

“We each made four, we missed our third and they missed their fifth (in the first overtime),” Clawson head coach Jared Kullman said. “Their fifth shooter would have won the game for them. Alex Maison made the save.”

In the second shootout, teams pick five new shooters and the first team that gains a lead, after each takes turns shooting, wins.

“We made our first, Alex Maison actually took the shot and made it, their shooter missed the net completely,” Kullman said. “All the shooters were great today, the one Alex had a shot at (stopping) he got. You can’t imagine all that pressure.”

The junior goalie’s key save in the first shootout and goal in the second gave his team a little revenge. Lutheran North eliminated the Trojans the past two years in the playoffs and last year in a double shootout game like the one the teams played on Thursday.

Clawson now turns its attention to the district finals where it will play Detroit Country Day on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Notre Dame Prep.

“Country Day is always a good team, they have some very good players and we are aware they know us too,” Kullman said. “I think it’s going to be a tight game.”
