Michigan’s 102 state parks have plenty of trails, open space and natural obstacles, making them the perfect playground to explore, get some fresh air and enjoy a little exercise.

Below are a few upcoming opportunities to get active at state parks this December.

EcoTrek Group Workout -- Ionia Recreation Area (Ionia County)

Saturday, Dec. 13, 10 a.m.

This class will incorporate flexibility, strength training and cardio using natural surroundings to challenge your body. Pre-register by calling 517-243-6538 or by emailingstrengthappeal@hotmail.com.

Guided Snow Shoe Hikes -- P.J. Hoffmaster State Park (Muskegon County)

Saturday, Dec. 13, 20 and 27, 10:30 a.m.

Bring your snowshoes or rent a pair from the park ($5 per pair) and meet at the Gillette Visitor Center. RSVP required, call 231-798-3573 for details.

Lantern-Lit Trail -- Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (Ontonagon County)

Saturday, Dec. 27, 6 p.m.

Cross-country ski or snowshoe along the illuminated Superior Trail for stunning nighttime winter scenery. Call (906) 885-5206 for details.

A Recreation Passport is required for any motor vehicle entering a Michigan state park, boat launch, state forest campground or nonmotorized state trailhead parking.

Residents can purchase the Passport for just $11 ($5 for motorcycles) at the time of Michigan license plate renewal through Secretary of State.
