Gas Prices Still Near All-Time High in Clawson

Prices at the pumps in Clawson are about $4.19 on Monday.

Clawson's gas prices remained among the highest in the continental United States on Monday at an average of about $4.19 in Metro Detroit.

The price is up 13 cents over the week and 44 cents over the same time last year, according to Dearborn-based auto club AAA Michigan.

Though prices remain high, they're down from $4.25 on Friday, which was a penny shy of Michigan's record-high average of $4.26 set in May 2011.

The Detroit Free Press reports that prices increased in Michigan following lingering issues at several Midwest refineries that supply gasoline to the state. In addition, speculation among Midwest refiners likely is causing panic, which means refiners are buying gasoline at a premium to meet contract orders from wholesalers.

AAA Michigan analysts say it is difficult to predict how long the higher prices will last, but warned they could continue to climb before coming down.

The lowest price reported on MichiganGasPrices.com this morning from Clawson was $4.19, both at Citgo (24 N. Rochester Rd.) and BP (206 W. 14 Mile Rd.).
