Police Chief May Lose Job for Stealing Election Sign

The Waterford Township Police Chief was caught on video removing a political sign in July.

A veteran police chief’s future with an Oakland County police department will be determined when the Michigan State Police wrap-up the investigation this month.

Waterford Township Police Chief Daniel McCaw is in jeopardy of losing his job after he was caught on videotape removing a political sign in July.

He has been on administrative leave since late September, The Oakland Press reported.

McCaw removed the political sign and put it in the backseat of his own vehicle while off-duty and was caught on a camera mounted on the dashboard of a Waterford squad car.

The political sign opposed the police millage renewal, a proposal that was essential to McCaw’s budget, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Sign owner Kyle McGrath said his signs were all lawfully placed. He said there were several other signs posted where his sign was located, but his sign — the only to oppose the measure favored by the police chief — was the only one taken down, according The Oakland Press.

McCaw was known for taking a tough stance on people removing signs illegally. His department charged a 17-year-old boy with larceny for stealing a yard sign promotoring the reelection of Barack Obama.

McCaw became Waterford Police Chief in 2006 and has worked in the department since 1986, according to the Detroit Free Press.
