Clawson Relay For Life Kickoff Party Scheduled for Feb. 15

At 6 p.m. Feb. 15, you can help fight a disease that affects nearly every person in one way, shape or form: cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Kickoff Party will take place in the Community Room at , and there is no better way for folks to get involved in the fight against this disease than to check out the Kickoff Party and the Relay For Life, said Felicia McMullen, ACS community representative.

“There no commitment at all when you attend this Kickoff Party,” McMullen said. “It’s just to let people know what we do, what the Relay For Life is all about and how they can help.”

The Relay For Life is the single largest nonprofit event in the world, and Clawson will do its part May 5-6 at . 

Doing your part in the Relay For Life is as easy as visiting relayforlife.org and registering yourself or a team of participants.

“Anyone can register online,” MCMullen said. “There’s a $10 registration fee, but that counts against your fundraising goal. There is no minimum fundraising required — every penny helps — but if you can raise $100, you get an event T-shirt. The $10 registration fee counts toward that $100 goal already.”

Cancer survivors may register for free and are eligible for several perks, McMullen added. They also receive special recognition at the event in May.

“We consider you a cancer survivor from the day of diagnosis on,” she said. “Because every day, you're surviving cancer; every day, you’re fighting.”

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. Those are the words that drive the Relay For Life, McMullen said, and the more people who get involved with the event, the better.

“Clawson is such a great community and so supportive,” she said. “Last year, we had 15 teams, and this year, we want to add at least 10 more teams.”

Teams can range from three to 15 people and can be made up of family, friends and co-workers.

The Kickoff Party at Clawson City Hall is something McMullen encourages everyone to attend.

“There’ll be speakers there who have firsthand accounts of what it’s like to be a cancer survivor. It's a great event.” she said. “We’re always looking for more involvement, more people to help with this fight.”
