Sports at a Glance: Key Game For Clawson Soccer

The Clawson varsity boys soccer team has its biggest game of the season at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when it heads to Lake Shore.

Both teams are currently undefeated in the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division. The Trojans are 6-0-1 in the Gold and the Panthers are 3-0-3.

A win would likely mean a second consecutive division title for Clawson. It has five regular season games scheduled after Wednesday and only one of them is against a team that is over .500 (Marysville, Oct. 12) and it’s not against an opponent in the Gold.

But getting past Lake Shore won’t be easy. The Panthers have been one of Clawson’s toughest opponents in recent years. The teams played a game back on Aug. 31 that ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Trojans have only managed three goals in the school's last three meetings. Last year, the teams played two games and one ended in a 0-0 tie while Lake Shore won the second meeting 3-0.

Reversing that trend with some early offense will be a key for them on Wednesday.

Football

The other Clawson team with a great shot at a division title is the varsity football team.

It has to wait one more week for its pivotal game against St. Clair Shores South Lake that will determine the MAC Bronze Division. Both schools are undefeated in the division and have non-division opponents lined up for this coming weekend.

The Trojans visit Warren Woods Tower for a game on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Titans are 0-5 this season, but don’t expect a cakewalk for Clawson. The game between the schools last year was very close, the Trojans won 31-28, even though Warren Woods was struggling going into the game at 2-3.

A win will this week will put the Trojans one victory away from guaranteeing its second straight playoff appearance.
