The victim, a 44-year-old Milford Township woman whose name is being withheld pending the notification of relatives, was trapped in the fiery crash. She died of a combination of thermal burns and smoke/soot inhalation and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Oakland County Medical Examiners Office.

A witness was on the phone reporting erratic driving to Oakland County dispatchers when the crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on West Pontiac Trail near Addington Drive in Commerce Township, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

The caller said the driver of a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse was “swerving all over the roadway and almost hitting other vehicles.” Before the witness could share more details, the SUV rear-ended a 1997 GMC Jimmy preparing to make a left turn. The GMC Jimmy flipped over and caught fire, trapping the woman inside, according to the report.

The woman, who was employed by Pizza Hut, was making a delivery run at the time of the accident.

Police are awaiting the results of blood tests before charging the driver of the Chevrolet Traverse. He was treated for minor injuries at Providence Park Hospital in Novi, then transported to the Oakland County Jail.

The sheriff’s office expects to present its case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday.
