Boy, 13, Leads Wild Chase; Sister, 8, Rides Shotgun

A high-speed chase ended in a crash. Police weren't aware of the ages of the occupants.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Police found an unexpected driver and passenger after getting a tip about a car erratically driving about 11:30 p.m. Saturday: a 13-year-old boy and, riding shotgun, his 8-year-old sister.

A Macomb County sheriff’s deputy noticed the suspect Nissan Altima stopped at a red light on westbound Metropolitan Parkway near Harper in Clinton Township and initiated a traffic stop.

The boy pulled over, but “before the deputy could approach the vehicle, the driver fled westbound on Metropolitan Parkway at a high-rate of speed,” the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

The deputy pursued the fleeing vehicle, still unaware of the age of the occupants. The driver eventually lost control, crossed a grassy median and ended up on eastbound Metropolitan Parkway, police said.

The two juveniles jumped out of the vehicle and began to run on foot. They were eventually apprehended with the assistance of Clinton Township police.

The car belonged to the girlfriend of the children’s father, according to police.

The girl was turned over to her mother, and the boy was taken to the Macomb Juvenile Justice Center, where he appeared in a detention hearing Monday. He faces charges of unlawful driving away, fleeing and eluding, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.

The 13-year-old’s record reportedly includes a terrorism threat and a minor in possession of a weapon — a BB gun — that was subsequently dismissed, WXYZ-TV reported.
