Clinton Township Couple Dies of Cancer Five Months Apart

Jerry and Sandra Fleming were married for almost five years.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A 52-year-old Clinton Township man passed away this past Thursday after a nine-month battle with cancer. He lost his life just five months after his wife died of ovarian cancer.

Jerry, who owned a computer technical support company called Shores-Tech Computers, was married to his beloved wife Sandra Fleming for almost five years. Sandra died in March at the age of 40.

Jerry was a father of three when he met Sandra on an online dating website in 2010. They married one year later.

The Detroit News followed Jerry and Sandra's love story since February.

“There is a biblical term about the refiners’ fire burning away the impurities,” Jerry once told The Detroit News. “Cancer does that for those you love. I only see Sandra as perfect."

Jerry was diagnosed with Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tonsil just two years after Sandra was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer.

“Sandra has given me the love I longed for,” Jerry told The Detroit News in February.

The couple did all they could to be together, including coordinating treatment appointments at Karmanos Cancer Center and staying in the same hospital room.

“I now know what it is like to really be in love and the pleasure has been worth the pain,” Jerry said.

A funeral service is scheduled for Jerry for 10 a.m. Tuesday at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. Visitation is being held until 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
