Clinton Twp. Eye Docs Give Their Green to Fund 3 Community Gardens

Family Eye Care Associates has partnered with the Michigan State University Extension Garden Mini-Grant Program to fund three community garden sites in Clinton Township, Eastpointe and Washington Township.

Five Clinton Township eye doctors are getting into gardening, or at least helping to support the practice in three local communities.

Drs. William Lakin, Robert Schick, Gregory Kalkofen, Michael Breza and Cheryl Junker of Family Eye Care Associates recently partnered with the Michigan State University Extension Garden Mini-Grant Program to fund three community garden sites in Clinton Township, Eastpointe and Washington Township.

“We wanted to partner with MSU Extension to support the gardening efforts in these communities and promote the healthy eating and healthy eye care that comes with growing a garden and eating fresh, healthy produce,” said Lakin, who also chairs the Clinton Township Kiwanis group’s annual food drive, in a prepared statement.

Through this mini-grant program, local residents have the opportunity to grow community gardens that supply fresh produce to food pantries, schools and churches in the area. Family Eye Care Associate’s $500 grant to the program will allow three such gardens to be planted in their offices' towns.

“MSUE is grateful to businesses like Family Eye Care Associates who contribute locally,” said MSU Extension teacher and program head Kathe Hale, in a prepared statement. “They help keep an important program running.”
