Clinton Twp. Man Fatally Shoots Wife Inside Home During Fight: Police

Prosecutors said the woman called 911 and asked officers to come to the home for a domestic dispute before the shooting.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A Clinton Township man could spend the rest of his life in prison after fatally shooting his wife while she was on the phone with police, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

Steven Wheeler, 30, was charged with first-degree murder (life felony) and felony firearm (two year mandatory felony). He was placed in the Macomb County Jail without bail. His next court date was set for Monday.

Prosecutors said Wheeler and his wife got involved in a domestic incident Thursday just after 9 p.m. at their home on Woodward Street, in the area of 15 Mile Road and Beaconsfield Street.

Prosecutors said Wheeler's wife called 911 and asked for officers to come to her home because Wheeler was assaulting her. While she was on the phone with police, Wheeler shot her multiple times, killing her, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors did not identify the woman.

"Homes should never be a battleground. Let us unite in our commitment to stand against abuse, and ensure that justice is served for this unthinkable act," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.

The woman’s two young children were also inside the home when officers arrived, reports said.

Neighbors also said the couple was in the process of getting a divorce, reports said.
