Driver Facing Charges in Double Fatality Sued for Wrongful Death

Valon Gjykaj, 21, is awaiting trial on charges stemming from an accident that claimed his father's life and that of another motorist.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI β€” A Clinton Township man awaiting trial on charges related to a double fatality last winter has been named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estate of one of the victims.

Valon Gjykaj, 21, faces criminal charges of causing death while driving with a suspended license in the Feb. 6 crash that claimed the lives of Donald Schulte, 83, and his father, Pashk Gjykaj, 54. Police said Gjykaj crossed the center line in his 2011 Kia as he was northbound on Groesbeck Highway near 14 Mile Road and crashed with Schulte's vehicle.

Gjykaj's pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 1 before Macomb County Circuit Judge Joseph Toja. The charges against him are punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Renee Bianchini, an attorney representing Schulte's estate.It also names two others who may have co-owned the vehicle Gjykaj was driving, Prenk and Zoja Domgjoni of Lake Orion.

The lawsuit was assigned to Judge Jennifer Faunce.
