The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts is located on Macomb Community College’s Center Campus at 44575 Garfield Road in Clinton Township, Michigan 48038.

Dave Revels take great pride in presenting an authentic experience. Revels handles the lead vocals made famous by The Four Tops lead singer Levi Stubbs. He is joined by Samuel White, Anthony Davis and Larry Hines, along with two female singers called The Beehives. They will add the harmonies that were a distinctive part of Motown recordings provided by a session group called The Andantes. The Beehives are Sonia Revels (Dave’s wife) and Traci Robinson. A six-piece band backs the six singers.

Revels has been singing professionally for 35 years. He started out performing with the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based a capella group The Persuasions.

By the 1980s, he was touring with venerable Drifters, playing at venues from Las Vegas to Atlantic City. He also sang with The Coasters, appearing on the Grand Theatre stage in 2009. Along the way, he has soaked up the musical influences around him.

“Every time I’ve met someone in the music business, I’ve asked them what it takes to be successful —Dick Clark, Ben E. King, (songwriter) ‘Doc’ Pomus. It’s been quite an interesting journey,” he said.

As for Levi Stubbs and The Four Tops, “I had the pleasure of seeing him perform many times.”

When Revels decided to form a Four Tops tribute group, he knew he wanted to evoke the memories of the original group.

“(Some tribute performers) want to sing their own way,” he said. “To me, if you’re going to emulate someone, you want to emote the way (the original artist) did, not try to do your own vocal styling.”

In the case of The Four Tops, Revels said, a lot of the magic is in the memorable songs, written mostly by the legendary songwriter team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Their songs contained unforgettable melodies that endure decades later.

“The music is so infectious,” he said. “You move to the beat, you move to the melody. It’s the shared power of the music. It’s a love fest.”

As one reviewer puts it, “We know we can’t ever go back, but Dave Revels’ show makes an incredible effort at getting us there.”

Shadow’s of the 60s: A Tribute to Motown’s Super Groups is sponsored in part by the Macomb Center’s 2014-2015 Diamond sponsors First State Bank, The Macomb Daily, The Kresge Foundation, Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs and The Real Yellow Pages.
