1 Charged in Arab American News Break-In Attempt

A second suspect has been identified, but remains at large.

DEARBORN, MI – One person has been arrested and Dearborn police are still looking for a second suspect in last week’s attempted break-in at the Arab American News as clearly visible staff members worked to meet, police said.

Deandre Darnell Bey, 20, was arraigned Thursday in 19th District Court on several felonies, including attempted breaking and entering, larceny from a vehicle, malicious destruction of property and possession of burglary tools. Judge Mark W. Somers set bond at $25,000. His release is conditional on the requirement that he wear a GPS tether.

Bey and a second suspect, who has been identified, allegedly tried to break into the Arab American News, located on Chase Road, just north of Ford Road, about 2 a.m. on March 11.

Surveillance video shows the the suspects looking through the glass doors and windows of the office. One of the suspects is seen hitting the door with a hammer four times, damaging the glass.

At the time, Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said the fact that the would-be intruders could clearly see the building was occupied by multiple people was one of the troubling aspects of the attempted break-in.

“What is particularly disturbing about this crime is that brazen suspects made violent efforts to gain entry into the building which was clearly occupied by newspaper staff,” he said.

The motive is unclear, police said.
