1 Dead, 4 Hurt In Wayne County Wrong-Way Crash: Police

Police believe alcohol played a factor in the crash.

SOUTHGATE, MI — A woman was killed and four other people were injured in a Saturday night wrong-way crash in Wayne County, according to police.

Police said a suspected drunken driver was driving south in the northbound lanes on Allen Road near Orchard Street in Southgate at 9:45 p.m. when she collided head-on with another vehicle.

A 44-year-old Port Huron woman, who was a passenger inside the vehicle that was hit, was killed in the crash, according to police.

Three other people inside the vehicle that was hit were taken to nearby hospitals, including the driver, a woman who was pregnant and a 3-year-old child, according to police.

Their exact conditions were unknown but police said the 25-year-old Allen Park woman miscarried as a result of her injuries and other injuries included a broken clavicle and a spinal fracture, according to police.

The Riverview woman, who was driving the wrong-way, was arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated, according to police.

She was placed in jail while prosecutors review the case and determines any charges she may face.

"This was a preventable tragedy and the second serious crash in weeks in the City of Southgate resulting in serious injury or death due to drivers operating while intoxicated," police said in a news release. "Our hearts go out to the victims of these crashes. Their lives will forever be changed."
