1 Seriously Injured, Multiple Hurt In Dearborn Heights Crash: Police
An SUV smashed into multiple cars Saturday night in Dearborn Heights after fleeing officers during a traffic stop, police said.

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — A man was arrested Saturday night after he sped away from police during a traffic stop and slammed his vehicle into multiple cars, injuring a pregnant woman and multiple other people in Dearborn Heights, police said.
The pregnant woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she and her child were still in serious condition with life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said several others were injured in the crash and have been released from the hospital.
Ryan Edward Smith, 34, from Detroit, was charged with multiple felonies, including second degree fleeing and eluding, operating with a suspended license causing serious impairment and being a habitual offender with three prior felonies. In addition, police said he had an outstanding felony warrant.

Smith was placed in jail on a $750,000 bond. His next court date was scheduled for April 6.
Westland officers stopped an SUV police said Smith was driving on Inkster Road near Cambridge Street on the Dearborn Heights and Garden City border. When officers approached the SUV, Smith sped off, driving south on Inkster Road, police said.

Officers chased the SUV, which drove through a red light at the busy intersection of Inkster Road and Ford Road, smashing into multiple cars about 30 seconds after the initial traffic stop, police said.
Police said the Smith had no intention of stopping and complying with the officers, as his SUV sped away at speeds higher than 100 miles per hour.
