DEARBORN, MI — Abdullah Hammoud made history Tuesday night by becoming the first ever Arab-American mayor elected in Dearborn, multiple media outlets reported.

The 31-year-old Dearborn native and Democratic state representative captured more than 54% of the vote, according to City Clerk's unofficial results early Wednesday morning.

U.S. Census data shows that 47% of Dearborn residents identified as Arab ancestry. But Hammoud told Fox 2 Detroit those aren’t the only people who favored him at the polls.
