DEARBORN, MI — A deadly shooting inside Dearborn's Fairlane Mall will not result in murder charges, according to police.
The shooting happened last Friday inside the Fairlane Town Center where officers found Cameron Watkins and Keonte Seaborn, both 19 years old from Detroit, shot dead, according to police.
Cania Cain, 19, of Detroit, and Martinez Long, 19, of Oak Park, were each charged with carrying a concealed weapon, according to police.
They were each placed in jail with a $75,000 bond. Their next court date is scheduled for July 15.
Cain and Long are not facing murder charges because prosecutors said the shooting was in self-defense.
Police said Watkins and Seaborn both pulled out a gun during a fight. Watkins then fatally shot Seaborn with a gun he grabbed from Cain’s purse.
Watkins continued shooting recklessly in the mall, striking a person who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
That's when police said Long fatally shot Watkins. Prosecutors determined the shooting was in self-defense.
"Senseless gun violence continues to plague communities across the country," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said. "We are saddened by this entirely preventable tragedy but have to reiterate: We will expend all resources to keep our city safe and hold individuals responsible for dangerous behavior."
