DEARBORN, MI — A Westland man has been charged in connection with a Dearborn crash that killed three people, according to prosecutors.
The crash happened last Friday at 11:44 p.m. in the eastbound lanes on Interstate 94 near Michigan Avenue, according to police.
Police said a car slammed into the back of a semi-truck, which was stopped on the freeway due to flooding after heavy rainfall.
When officers arrived, they found three people dead in or around the car, according to police.
Prosecutors identified the victims as Myles Bland, 27, of Dearborn, Jailyn Riley, 24, and Alexandria Boynton, 24, both of Detroit.
The driver, Hilton Dorian Yopp III, 26, of Westland, was injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to police.
Prosecutors said Yopp III was drunk and speeding recklessly on the freeway when he slammed into the semi truck.
Yopp III was arrested and charged with three counts of operating while intoxicated – causing death and three counts of reckless driving – causing death.
He was placed in jail with a $200,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for July 15.
Both charges have a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
