When officers arrived at the scene, the armed man refused to cooperate and fled the area in a flat-bed tow truck, according to police.

The undercover officers followed the vehicle to a gas station in the area of Inkster and Van Born roads where they tried to arrest the man at 2:15 a.m., according to police.

During the arrest attempt, the man pulled out a handgun and immediately opened fire, striking both officers, according to police.

The officers quickly returned fire and struck the man, according to police.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.

Both police officers were also taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. They are now at home and recovering, according to police.

"This morning, two of our brave officers put themselves in harm's way to protect our community and were shot in the line of duty," Dearborn Police Chief Dearborn Issa Shahin said. "While we are deeply relieved and grateful that both officers are expected to make a full recovery, this critical incident is a stark reminder of the immense dangers our officers face every single day to keep Dearborn safe."

Police are still investigating the shooting and will review video, witness statements and other evidence.
