Bug Problem Abruptly Closes Wayne Clerk's Office

Insects fell out of a binder belonging to customer applying for gun permit, but problem wasn't as awful as you may have heard.

DETROIT, MI - The Wayne County Clerk’s Office opened as usual Tuesday morning after abruptly closing Monday afternoon after several inspects reportedly fell out of a binder a customer opened while applying for a concealed weapons permit.

Jina Sawani, a spokeswoman for the clerk’s office, told The Detroit News the insects weren’t bed bugs, as some media organizations reported, and that the office in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building was closed as a precaution and the carpet was sprayed.

“It took about took about three hours for the spray to diffuse, so we just ended up closing the office for the rest of the day.”

Only the second floor of the clerk’s office, which handles vital statistics, was closed.

Sawani apologized for the inconvenience the closure may have caused, but said “we couldn’t take a chance that people would pick up this bug and take it back to their homes.”
