FLAT ROCK, MI — One person was arrested after officials found three brand-new stolen Mustangs Thursday morning from the Flat Rock Ford Assembly Plant, Michigan State Police said.

Officials said the car thieves drove off from the plant in four to five 2022 Shelby GT500s at 3:20 a.m.

State troopers first found the car thieves trying to get gas at a Woodhaven gas station, but the thieves drove off once they spotted the officers, officials said.

Officers said they did not pursue the car thieves.

Troopers then found the Shelby GT500s on northbound 75 and Schaefer in Detroit and tried to stop the Mustangs, but they all drove away, officials said.

Rather than pursue all the Mustangs at once, troopers singled out one of the cars, pursuing the Shelby GT500 until it ran out of gas on westbound Interstate 96 near Martin Luther King, officials said.

The thief tried driving the car up a grass embankment but was arrested by officers, officials said. Officers said they blocked the Mustang from rolling back onto the freeway with their patrol car.

A tow truck driver alerted police about one of the stolen Shelby GT500s that was left abandoned on Interstate 75 near Livernois, officials said.

A third Shelby GT500 was found abandoned by Detroit police officers on Warren Road near 30th Street, officials said.

Police believe the two Shelby GT500s ran out of gas during the police chase.

All three Shelby GT500s were towed and preserved for evidence, as officials continue their investigation.
