City Forgives Pickup Fees as Cleanup Continues from Floods of 2014

Cars should be kept off streets so crews can pick up huge amounts of materials at the curb; DPW Yard open every day for drop off disposal.

Parking on the street makes it more difficult for crews to pick up flood-damaged items. (Patch file photo).

In order to continue to help Dearborn households affected by basement flooding, the City is encouraging people to keep their vehicles off the street in areas where damaged materials have been set on the curb.

This will allow heavy equipment to access and collect the large amounts of flood-damaged materials and remove it from neighborhoods.

Residents are asked to do this even if it is not their normal trash day/Public Service Day. On Public Service Day, it is mandatory for parked vehicles to be off the street.

If residents can’t wait for the curbside collection of non-hazardous bulk items they place at their curb, as an additional service, Dearborn’s DPW yard, 2915 Greenfield, will be open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Aug. 18-22, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23.

At these times, residents may drop off items to be disposed of for free.

Residents must be able to lift and carry their own items at the DPW Yard.

No hazardous wastes will be accepted at the DPW Yard.

The City is also reminding people that hazardous waste items and electronics are not allowed to be thrown out at the curb and will be left behind to protect the safety of residents, employees and the environment.

As always, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to dispose of hazardous materials in a proper way.

Items that cannot be placed at the curb are (partial list): paint, solvents, glue, car batteries, automotive parts, acids, antifreeze, gasoline, gas cans, floor wax, floor care products, carpet cleaner, furniture polish, bathroom cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and smoke detectors. Additionally, TVs, computers and other electronics.

Regular pickup of trash and recycling will continue as scheduled on residents’ normal trash and recycling days. Residents should not use their recycling or trash carts for disposal of flood-damaged items.

Trash and recycling carts should be kept separate from flood-damaged items to ensure timely pickup on their trash day.
