“Back to School is known as a shopping season, but in the sheltering industry, it also represents a peak in adoption time," Elaine Greene, executive director of Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, explained. "Families are back from summer vacation and ready to bring a new pet family member into their homes before school starts. We hope to find matches this Saturday for homeless animals and families looking for a new loved one.”

The shelter will have a large tent in the parking lot in front of the mall, where visitors can come meet a number of dogs looking for homes. Inside the mall, they'll find cats up for adoption from the shelter.

For the Adopt-A-Thon, the Shelter is reducing adoption fees by 50%, Saturday only, plus offering baked goods for sale from Fido Bakery and Shelter merchandise. There will be specials in the Mall from participating retailers, and WYCD 99.5 FM Detroit Country will be there from 2-4 p.m. with on-air talent Rachael Hunter.

Currently, the Dearborn Animal Shelter is in the midst of the $100K Challenge from Rachael Ray and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. During the three months of August, September and October, the Shelter must increase the number of adopted animals by at least 300 compared to last year to be in contention for grant money up to $100,000.

This Adopt-A-Thon with Westborn Mall is one of the ways the Shelter hopes to increase adoptions. For question about the event, or the shelter, call 313-943-2697, or visit www.DearbornAnimals.org.
