Dearborn Heights Man Resentenced In 2013 Porch Shooting: Report
Ted Wafer was originally convicted of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — A Dearborn Heights man was resentenced Wednesday after he was convicted of shooting a Detroit woman to death in 2013, according to a report from WDIV.
The Michigan Supreme Court vacated part of Ted Wafer's original verdict and resentenced him to 15-30 years in prison after they said his constitutional rights were violated the report said.
"We are aware of no cases in this state in which defendants were convicted of and received punishments for both second-degree murder and statutory involuntary manslaughter on the basis of a single killing," Justice David Viviano wrote.

Wafer was originally convicted of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter after police said he shot 19-year-old Renisha McBride to death.
Police said McBride crashed her car and just before dawn began pounding on Wafer's front door. Rather than call 911, Wafer said he feared for his life and shot McBride in self-defense. A jury rejected that claim.

Prosecutors believe McBride might have been confused as to where she was when she arrived on Wafer’s porch.
