Metro Detroit Man Presumed Dead After Swimming In Lake Erie: Sheriff

Officials said the man jumped from a boat and soon began to struggle and went underwater.

MONROE COUNTY, MI — A Dearborn man is believed to be dead after jumping from a boat into Lake Erie on Sunday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office.

Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, was on a 34-foot white Baja boat with four other adults at 6 p.m. Sunday in Lake Erie near Sterling State Park, officials said.

Officials said Hassoun went for a swim and soon began to struggle and went underwater.

The other boaters lost sight of him when he went underwater and was never seen again, officials said.

Officials said he was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

A rescue boat found the other boaters and took them to safety while they began searching for Hassoun, officials said.

The search was suspended at 11 p.m. Sunday due to unsafe wave conditions. The search was expected to continue Monday.
