DEARBORN, MI—Dearborn Public Schools will require face masks for students, staff and visitors inside all school buildings. The decision was revealed Tuesday as part of the reopening plan.

According to a news release, Dearborn will require masks to be worn until October 1 and then the district will reevaluate the conditions to see if mask wearing should be extended.

At this time, the district is not requiring vaccinations and reiterated "any decision about requiring vaccines for students would have to come from the state."

The district is also looking to improve air circulation throughout its buildings and cleaning frequently touched surfaces more often. It will also strive to maintain three-feet of social distancing in classrooms and implement an indoor limit of no more than 50 percent capacity for students and staff, including auditoriums and gyms.

"Community health experts at the state and local level are emphasizing that schools need to take a layered approach with multiple measures, including face masks, to keep students safe and in-school," Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said at the board meeting, according to the news release. "We want to give our students the best possible chance for a full year of face-to-face learning, which means taking what steps we can to stay safe, especially now with the delta variant."
