Dearborn Summer Camp Counselor Cited as a Hero

Chloe Haag "went out of their way to make sure our own were taken care of," Dearborn Mayor John B. O'Reilly Jr. said.

DEARBORN, MI — A summer camp counselor credited with saving children's lives last month when she saved them from being run over by an out-of-control car was honored as a hero Tuesday with a citation from Dearborn Mayor O’Reilly Jr.

The mayor met with counselor Chloe Haag and presented her with a citation honoring her for the instinctive, selfless actions she displayed in the face of danger in June, according to a press release.

Haag risked her own safety by ushering the children under her care from the path of an errant vehicle near a parking lot at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. Haag successfully prevented any of the children from being harmed, according to a news release.

Haag, 20, Dearborn resident and student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, is a first-year camp counselor who had been on the job for less than a week before the incident. She said that instinct guided her actions and she felt honored to be recognized by O’Reilly.

“I was a bit shaken up by the whole thing, but I think anyone would have done what I did,” Haag said.
