DTE Energy Needs to Enter Homes to Make Improvements

A public meeting will be held to familiarize residents and business owners with the modernization program, which starts in February.

DEARBORN, MI -- DTE Energy is hosting a community informational meeting this week to familiarize residents with a program designed to improve the reliability and safety of natural gas service to Dearborn customers.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave.

DTE will need to enter residents’ homes and businesses to complete the utility modernization program, which begins in February.

The program involves replacing aging natural gas infrastructure — mainly cast iron or unprotected steel mains, and steel or copper service lines. DTE also will install and relocate new natural gas advanced meters from inside to the outside of homes.

When the work is completed, customers will have safer and more convenient service, the utility said.

The work is being done to provide these benefits:

  • Fewer gas leaks with new main and service lines
  • Improved response time by having meters outside
  • Estimated meter reads will be minimized
  • Less customer inconvenience by eliminating the need to enter homes for maintenance work
  • More frequent and comprehensive inspections and maintenance work on meters that have been installed outside

The work will be done at no cost to customers.

The two project areas in Dearborn are bounded by Ford Road to the north, Prospect to the south, Mercury to the west and Miller to the east, and Warren to the north, Ford to the south, Chase to the west and Miller to the east.

Dearborn residents with questions can call DTE Energy at (313) 256-6227. Below is a map showing where the improvements will be made.
