Fifth-Grader Assists in United Way Torch Lighting

The torch will remain on display at the Dearborn Administration Center for about a month.

During the City of Dearborn’s annual torch lighting ceremony for United Way, Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. was assisted by Mohamad Bazzi, a fifth-grader at Snow Elementary School. Bazzi’s family; his teacher, Allison Dumke; and Dearborn city employees were in attendance to watch the kickoff of the charitable fundraising campaign.

A fifth-grader from Snow Elementary School helped Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly Jr. light the torch signifying the beginning of the community’s United Way campaign.

Mohamad Bazzi, who receives services provided by United Way of Southeastern Michigan, as well as his family and teacher, Allison Dumke, assisted in the ceremony on Oct. 26.

Dumke said Bazzi is a great classsroom helper and is always willing to assist his classmates. His favorite subject is math, and at home, he likes playing with his Xbox 360.

The torch will remain on display at the Dearborn Administrative Center for about a month as a reminder of the services United Way provides, which help those in need throughout Dearborn and the region by strengthening families, promoting health and education, working with at-risk youth and boosting communities.

The 2015 Community Giving campaign theme is “It Takes A Family.”

City of Dearborn employees have been among the highest voluntary donors in the Wayne County area to help fund the campaign.
