Ford Recalls 450K Vehicles Over Fuel Tank Issue

The automaker also announced small recall of pickups that could lurch out of park position.

Ford Motor Co. said Monday it is recalling about 450,000 midsize vehicles to repair problems that can cause gas tanks to leak fuel.

Affected vehicles include some 2010 and 2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans built in Mexico from July 21, 2008 through March 4, 2011.

The Dearborn-based automaker said a valve on a gasoline vapor recovery canister can stick, causing repeated air pressure changes in the gas tank that can eventually cause a crack and possible fuel leak, The Detroit News reports.

Ford said there have been no reports of fires or injuries as a result of the defect.

Owners with affected vehicle should take them to a Ford dealership, where they will be inspected. Repairs, if needed, will be made at no charge. The powertrain control module software will also be updated.

Most of the affected vehicles — 411,205 — were sold in the United States.

Also on Monday, the automaker announced a small, 13-vehicle recall of its 2016 F-650 trucks over an issue with the steering column. The “park” position mechanism in the automatic transmission could fracture, potentially causing unintended movement. Those vehicles were manufactured at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant.

Dealers will replace the steering column and reconfigure the instrument panel at no cost to the customer.
