DETROIT, MI – A massive sinkhole the size of a semi-trailer opened up Tireman near Greenfield on the city’s west side Thursday, and police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

The police department retweeted photos from WJBK-TV showing several officers at the site of the highway collapse. Both eastbound lanes of traffic are affected.

Bryan Peckinpaugh, a spokesman for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, said in an email to the Detroit Free Press that a sewer pipe beneath the street apparently failed, causing the sinkhole.

It’s unclear how long repairs will take.
