Innocent Driver Dies In Dearborn Police Chase Crash: Police

DEARBORN, MI — An innocent driver was killed Monday morning in a crash during a police chase in Dearborn, police said.

Police said officers tried stopping a Ford Econoline van at 8:40 a.m for a traffic violation a driver on eastbound Michigan Avenue at South Gully Road.

Instead of pulling over, the driver sped away and ran a red light at the intersection, hitting an SUV, killing the driver, a 61-year-old woman from Lincoln Park, police said.

The man who fled police then got out of his car and ran away from police, who eventually caught him moments later, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries he sustained in the crash, police said.

"This is a terrible tragedy, and we offer our condolences to the victim’s family and friends," Dearborn Police Commander Timothy McHale said. "I ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision to please contact the Dearborn Police Department."

Eastbound Michigan Avenue at Gulley Road was closed Monday morning as police were still investigating the crash and why the man fled police.
