DC Wrestler Splits Matches in State Quarterfinals

Divine Child's Jamie Jakes will head to the consolation round Saturday after losing one, then winning one match in Friday quarterfinals.

senior Jamie Jakes will compete in the consolation round of wrestling state finals on Saturday after winning one, and losing one match in the Friday quarterfinals.

Jakes lost on a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals (152 pounds) to Mason senior Nick Starzec.

Starzec scored a takedown with only seven seconds left in the second round and that was enough to get him to the semifinals.

Jakes made an unsuccessful diving attempt at a takedown with 10 seconds to go in the match, but his best chance at points came in the first round. He put Starzec on the mat as both wrestlers were going out of bounds.

"He didn't get the points and I think it was an issue of control," Falcons coach Tyler Elkins said. "If it was me, and I'm a little biased, I would of awarded him the points."

Elkins said Jakes has a habit of wrestling really close matches. In the opening round, Jakes won a 5-4 decision.

"He usually is good in those clutch situations," Elkins said. "It makes it real tough on his coaches that's for sure."

Jakes beat Christian Shelby of Tecumseh later in the day.
